Tree Trimming & Pruning Services Across the Twin Cities
Proper trimming keeps trees healthy, safe, and storm-ready. We prune with technique — not just chainsaws — using cuts that preserve tree structure and encourage healthy growth through Minnesota's demanding seasons.
Trimming That Strengthens Trees — Not Just Makes Them Shorter
Minnesota trees face a lot: heavy snowfall, ice storms, 70+ mph straight-line winds, and the freeze-thaw cycles that stress wood year after year. The trees that hold up through those conditions are the ones that have been properly maintained — with the right cuts, at the right places, at the right time.
Bad trimming — especially topping, which is still disturbingly common in the Twin Cities — creates the opposite result. It leaves open wounds, invites decay, and produces structurally weak regrowth that is more likely to fail in a storm than the original branch would have been.
SMS Property Designs uses proper pruning technique on every job. We remove what should be removed, make clean cuts at branch collars, and leave trees in better shape for the next decade than we found them.
We Don't Top Trees — Here's Why That Matters
Topping is cutting major limbs back to stubs. It looks drastic because it is. The open wounds invite disease, the regrowth is weakly attached and breaks more easily than the original branches, and the tree often goes into long-term decline. We have seen the aftermath of topping across the Twin Cities and we don't do it.
What we do instead: we identify which branches are creating problems and remove them properly, using cuts at branch unions that the tree can seal over naturally. The result is a healthier, safer, better-looking tree.
How Tree Trimming Works
Tree Assessment
We evaluate each tree's condition, identify problem areas — crossing branches, deadwood, tight unions — and discuss what work the tree actually needs.
Written Quote
You receive a clear quote for the work recommended. We explain what we're doing and why before you approve anything.
Proper Pruning
We make all cuts at the correct location — branch collars, branch bark ridges — so the tree can compartmentalize and seal the wound efficiently.
Cleanup & Haul
All clippings are chipped and removed. We clean up the work area before we leave so the yard looks better than when we arrived.
"Had several large silver maples that were overgrown and dropping big branches every storm. SMS came out, trimmed them properly — not just hacked off the tops — and explained exactly what they were doing. Those trees made it through last winter without a single branch down."
Tree Trimming FAQ
Late winter or early spring, before buds break, is ideal for most deciduous trees — the tree is dormant, disease pressure is low, and wounds close quickly when growth resumes. That said, removing dead or hazardous branches is appropriate at any time. Some trees like oaks should not be trimmed in spring due to oak wilt risk; late summer through early winter is safer for those.
A standard guideline is no more than 25 percent of a tree's live canopy per season. Taking more stresses the tree severely and triggers excessive, weakly attached regrowth. If a tree needs more work than that, we recommend phasing it over two or three seasons to let the tree recover between sessions.
No. Tree topping is harmful and we do not do it. It removes large portions of the crown, leaving open wounds that invite disease and create structurally weak, fast-growing regrowth. Topped trees often end up more dangerous than they were before. We use proper reduction cuts that preserve structure and tree health.
Crown cleaning removes dead, dying, diseased, or weakly attached branches from throughout the crown. Crown thinning selectively removes live branches to reduce canopy density, improve light and air penetration, and reduce wind resistance — which is particularly important in Minnesota where wind is a major tree stressor. Many trees benefit from cleaning annually and thinning every three to five years.
Trees growing into or immediately adjacent to utility lines are typically maintained by the utility company on their side. We can safely trim the property-side branches and advise you on coordinating with Xcel Energy or your local utility for the portion closest to the lines.
Most mature shade trees benefit from trimming every three to five years. Young trees establishing their structure may need lighter attention every one to two years. Fast-growing species like cottonwood and silver maple often warrant more frequent work. We will advise on a schedule that makes sense for your specific trees.
