Stump Grinding in Bloomington & the Twin Cities
Leftover stumps are an eyesore, a tripping hazard, and an obstacle for anything you want to do with your yard. We grind them flush to grade or below — fast, clean, and ready for whatever comes next.
Clean Out the Stump. Get Your Yard Back.
After a tree is removed, the stump left behind can sit for years if you let it. It takes up space, makes mowing awkward, harbors pests, and can become a safety hazard. Stump grinding is the right solution — it eliminates the stump completely and leaves the area clean and level.
SMS Property Designs grinds stumps throughout Bloomington and the Twin Cities metro. We use professional-grade equipment that can handle stumps of any size, including large oaks, cottonwoods, and maples that commonly need removal in the area.
Whether you just had a tree removed and want the stump gone in the same visit, or you have an old stump that's been sitting for years, we can grind it down and leave the area ready for sod, planting, or general cleanup.
Why Grind the Stump?
How Stump Grinding Works
On-Site Assessment
We look at the stump — size, species, accessibility, and root spread — and quote accordingly. Multiple stumps get a combined rate.
Call 811 if Needed
For stumps near utilities or in areas where the grinder needs to go deep, we confirm underground utility locations before we start cutting.
Grinding
Our grinder reduces the stump and major surface roots to wood chips and sawdust, typically 6–12 inches below grade. Done in under an hour for most stumps.
Cleanup & Fill
The grindings can be left in the hole as a natural fill material, or we haul everything away clean. We rake the area before we leave.
"Had three stumps in the backyard from trees I'd had removed years ago. SMS came out, ground all three in about two hours, and raked everything clean. We were able to sod over two of them that same season. Straightforward, no nonsense, fair price."
Stump Grinding FAQ
We typically grind stumps 6 to 12 inches below grade, which is sufficient for sod installation, replanting, or general cleanup. If you need deeper grinding for a specific use case — like pouring a concrete pad nearby — let us know upfront and we will quote accordingly.
The grinding process produces a pile of wood chips and sawdust mixed with soil. We can leave the material as fill for the hole, which will settle and decompose over time — or we can haul it all away for an additional fee. We confirm your preference before starting.
Yes, but we recommend waiting at least one season before planting in the exact location, as the decaying root mass affects soil quality in the short term. For sod, seed, or ground cover, the area is typically ready for prep work right away after grinding.
Yes. Laying sod over an unground stump will result in poor rooting, uneven settling, and a depression in your lawn as the stump decays beneath the surface. Grind the stump and prep the soil properly before any sod or seeding work in that area.
Stump grinding reduces the stump below grade but leaves the root system in the ground to decay naturally. Full stump removal — excavating the entire root ball — is a much more disruptive and expensive process. For the vast majority of residential situations, grinding is the right solution and what we recommend.
