Cool-season grasses are the correct choice for Minnesota. Kentucky bluegrass is the standard for Twin Cities lawns — it handles cold winters, grows dense, and looks excellent when established. Turf-type tall fescue blends work well in shadier areas with less foot traffic. We source sod from regional Minnesota farms grown specifically for our climate — not warm-season turf from southern growers.

Spring and early fall are ideal — cool temperatures and natural moisture help establishment. Spring installation typically runs from late April through June. Fall installation from late August through mid-September gives the sod time to root before freeze-up. Summer installation is possible but requires more intensive irrigation. We do not recommend installing after mid-October when soil temperatures become too cold for rooting.

Minimize traffic on new sod for the first two to three weeks. After about two weeks, light foot traffic is generally fine. Heavy use — children, pets, lawn furniture — should wait until the sod has rooted firmly, which is typically three to four weeks post-installation under consistent watering conditions. You can test rootedness by tugging gently at the sod edge — if it holds, roots are establishing.

For the first two weeks, water daily — sometimes twice daily in hot weather — keeping both the sod and the top inch of soil beneath it consistently moist. Once roots begin to establish, you can gradually reduce frequency and increase depth per watering cycle. For most residential applications, yes. Sod gives immediate coverage, holds against erosion, and establishes cleanly without a months-long window of bare soil growing weeds. Seed is more cost-effective at large scale, but it requires specific conditions, patience, and months before you have a real lawn. If you want results this season and your project is residential, sod is the right call in most cases.
